  • Accessible Tourism Destination Certification Programme by TGB, Belgium

    The first international certification programme for accessible tourism destinations has been developed and carried out in Lousã, Portugal by the Belgian Accessibility Office, Toegangelijkheidsbureau (TGB). The Certification Programme is a completely new destination management tool which provides an accurate measure of the excellence of an accessible tourism destination, based on strictly defined criteria.

    The European network of cities, EUROCITIES, has established a Working Group on Barrier-Free Cities for All. The Group is chaired by Ms. Barbara Berninger, City of Berlin.

  • Strategic Framework for Tourism in England - Action Plans Out for Consultation

    The Strategic Framework for Tourism in England 2010 – 2020, launched in spring 2010, identified key drivers for securing our industry’s future. A series of Action Plans outlining shared priorities have now been compiled by cross-industry groups focussing on activities to be implemented in the first three years of the Strategic Framework’s 10 year period. ENAT Members are invited to download the Action Plans and send comments to VisitEngland.

  • Coming Soon - Access to all in Europe: A Study About 11 Cities

    This spring, Certu (the Centre for Studies on Urban planning, Transport and Public facilities, France) will publish a study about practices improving access for all in 11 European cities. This analysis is part of a comprehensive review led by Certu to identify interesting examples of accessibility practices in Europe.

  • 140 Tourism Businesses in the Basque Country now have the Accessibility Seal

    The Vice Minister for Trade and Tourism, Pilar Zorrilla, presided over the first seal award event, held in Vitoria-Gasteiz. The Accessible Seal is the result of the Accessibility Programme developed by the Department of Industry, Innovation, Trade and Tourism of the Basque Government which prepares businesses to orient their services to all visitors.

  • Launch of the Access●City Award. EU Calls for Entries from Across Member States

    Brussels, 27 July 2010 – The European Commission announces the launch of “Access●City Award”, the first European Award for Accessible Cities. This annual award aims to highlight the European cities that are taking the most effective and innovative action to improve their accessibility for disabled citizens.

    Walking past St. James’ yesterday I chanced upon this brilliant installation: a water powered lift that addresses the challenge of equal access to historic sites. It is part of London Festival of Architecture 2010 which has “The Welcoming City” as its main theme.
