Following the launch of Portugal’s Accessible Tourism certification scheme in February 2025, Turismo de Portugal continues to promote the implementation of NP ISO 21902:2022 – Tourism and related services — Accessible tourism for all.

The initiative aims to facilitate access to the standard among Portuguese tourism stakeholders, raise awareness of accessibility in tourism, and support organisations in improving their accessibility practices.

During 2025, Turismo de Portugal presented the certification scheme and supporting technical documents, while specialised training on accessible tourism was delivered to auditors from certification bodies.

In October 2025, the official certification brand was also registered. As the implementation process is still ongoing, further capacity-building actions continue to be developed.

In March 2026, a new training session for certification auditors focused on the application of Portuguese accessibility legislation (Decree-Law 163/2006), a key reference framework for accessibility in the built environment.

The scheme is expected to contribute to a more consistent and structured approach to accessibility across the tourism sector in Portugal, reinforcing alignment with international standards and supporting continuous improvement in accessible tourism practices. The initiative is also helping to strengthen awareness and dialogue around accessibility and inclusive tourism in Portugal.
