Queensland's Year of Accessible Tourism 2023-2024

The Year of Accessible Tourism in Queensland is an opportunity to recognise the importance of accessible tourism experiences for all, and to ignite change and create opportunities for Queensland tourism businesses.
Targeted initiatives are being delivered as part of the Year of Accessible Tourism, with $12 million in new funding invested to help the Queensland tourism industry better cater to visitors of all abilities and provide greater destination experiences for all holidaymakers in Queensland.
This will enable everyone to participate in a tourism experience with choice and confidence and lay the foundations for making Brisbane 2032 the world’s most accessible and inclusive sporting event for athletes and spectators.
Background
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) elected Brisbane 2032 as Olympic and Paralympic host on 21 July 2021.
In 2022, Get Skilled Access and TravAbility delivered the Accessible Tourism in Queensland project on behalf of the Department of Tourism and Sport, assessing tourist infrastructure accessibility and business capability in six tourism destinations including Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Fraser Coast, Townsville/Outback Queensland and Cairns.
This initiative contributed to the decision to declare 2023 to 2024 the Year of Accessible Tourism, as a State-wide project.
While the Olympic and Paralympic Games are still 8 years away, Queensland has developed - and will continue to support - a wide range of projects, including Holiday Destination Guides, Workshops and Learning Videos.
Accessible Tourism Resources
A dedicated webpage of Accessible Tourism Resources provides a wealth of information, contacts and guidelines for businesses and communities, including best practices and advisory materials on business development, accessibility marketing, research, infrastructure and much more.
The website features podcasts and online learning videos made by Queenslanders with disabilities and advocates for accessible and inclusive tourism.
Support Grants for Accessible Tourism
The State Government's support grants have already led to significant results.
Case studies show how investment in the Year of Accessible Tourism is creating better accessible tourism experiences for everyone.
