  • Lousã - Accessible Tourism Destination, Portugal

    Located in the central region of Portugal, Lousã is an area which epitomises the unspoilt beauty of the Serra da Lousã mountain landscape. Following an initiative to host the first National Accessible Tourism Conference in April 2007, Lousã civil society organised a Task Force to plan for the development of Lousã as the first Accessible Tourism Destination in Portugal. The project aims to serve as an example both nationally and internationally. The website which is currently in Portuguese, will be available in English, French and Spanish in due course.

  • Tenerife Sur, Municipality of Arona Access Plan and Guidebook, 2009

    The Municipality of Arona, Tenerife Sur, has taken up the challenge to make its tourist offers available to everyone, including people with disabilities, through the Arona Integral Accessibility Plan. An access guide to Tenerif Sur, produced in 2007, covers information bureaux, facilities, transport and accommodations in three languages, Spanish, English, German. The Guide has 170 pages and is richly illustrated.

  • Tourism for All - Manabi-tai

    The objective of the project is to create a social environment in which everyone, including those with restricted physical ability, can travel comfortably without having to worry about inaccessibility.

  • U.K. 'Accessible Travel and Leisure' Franchising Scheme

    UK-based company, Accessible Travel and Leisure specialises in creating holiday packages for customers with disabilities. In 2007 it launched a new franchising scheme which provides the opportunity for disabled people to run their own business from home, selling accessible holidays.

  • Accessible Train and Station Design for Disabled People - A Code of Practice

    Under s.71B of the UK Railways Act 1993 the Secretary of State maintains a Code of Practice to protect the interests of disabled people travelling by rail. All passenger train and station operators are encouraged to use the document, and those who are licensed must follow its standards. Accessible Train and Station Design for Disabled people: A Code of Practice, published in July 2008, replaced the previous version published by the Strategic Rail Authority, and incorporates a clearer structure, more-up-to-date guidance, and standards mirroring new European rules. This new edition code of practice replaces all previous versions. It provides standards and guidance for accessibility at railway stations, and should be used by all train and station operators whenever they carry out works on their facilities.

  • New ENAT Studies on Disabled Tourists' Rights and Services for Accessible Tourism

    Two new studies produced by ENAT research staff are now available for download from the ENAT website. The first report, " Rights of Tourists with Disabilities in the European Union Framework" examines the key legislation and the way in which the rights of people with disabilities are being extended and safeguarded. The second report, "Services and Facilities for Accessible Tourism in Europe" presents definitions of accessible tourism, the target public and their specific needs, and an overview of services and facilities that tourism providers can adopt to improve accessibility. Both reports include many examples of good practice drawn from several European countries, illustrating a range of accessible tourism and travel services.

  • Bangkok Recommendations on Accessible Tourism in Asia and the Pacific (2007)

    A major milestone has been reached with the publication this week of the recommendations from the Second International Conference on Accessible Tourism held November 22 - 24, 2007 at the United Nations in Bangkok, Thailand. Sixteen recommendations directed towards governments, public agencies, tourism businesses and academia seek to promote the development of inclusive tourism in the region, targetting a wide range of measures for both specialised and mainstream services.

  • Accessible Tourism is Big Money

    At a congress held last week by the European Network for Accessible Tourism (ENAT), over 200 representatives from international disability organisations, tourist boards and private enterprise came to the overwhelming conclusion that accessible tourism is the fastest-growing business opportunity in the tourism industry.

  • ENAT International Congress on Tourism for All, Marina D'Or, Spain

    This week the Marina d'Or beachside holiday resort in the Region of Valencia, Spain welcomes some 200 delegates at the ENAT International Congress on Tourism for All, organised by Fundación ONCE and supported by the European Commission. Guest speakers from North and South America, as well as Australia will complement European presenters from all sectors of the tourism industry, public authorities, NGOs and centres of research and education.
